Why the Next Game of Thrones Spinoff Shouldn’t Be Aegon’s Conquest

The world of Ice and Fire keeps getting bigger. Alongside other programs already broadcast or in development, such as Dragon House or Jon Snow’s sequel series, HBO is now considering a new show set in the Game of Thrones universe that would tell the story of Aegon’s conquest of Westeros, according to a report from Variety. The story serves as something of an origin point for the world of Westeros as we know it, but it’s also a terribly boring idea.

For those unaware (or already a bit overwhelmed by the number of Aegons in this universe), the story of Aegon’s Conquest would be a Dragon House prequel – in other words, a prequel to a prequel. It would probably take place around 130 years before most of the events of Dragon Houseplacing it almost 300 years before the events of the original Game Of Thrones series.

Aegon wasn’t the first Targaryen to settle in Westeros after the fate of Valyria, when the region’s ancient volcano erupted and covered the world’s most advanced city in ash and destroyed it. , but he was the most ambitious. He, along with his two sisters and the three dragons of the trio, united all of Westeros under one crown, turning the Seven Kingdoms into one.

The problem with these events as the basis of a show is that there isn’t much room for the kind of interpersonal drama and politics that HBO Game Of Thrones the shows are the best. The current version of Aegon’s Conquest is more of a preview than a full story. The events mainly come from fire and bloodthe first part of author George RR Martin’s fictional history of the Targaryen dynasty, which is also the source of House of the Dragon. Kinda Dragon House done with Dance of the Dragons, the story could easily be expanded, but Aegon’s conquest succeeds thanks to his military prowess and the ferocious dragons, rather than the shrewdness of their political maneuvering.

There’s nothing wrong with Game Of Thrones Or Dragon House‘s massive battles, but a series that’s so completely pinned down to those moments lacks the kind of startling character moments that made Martin’s world sing on TV. In fact, in Martin’s version of Conquest, Aegon’s dominance is so assured that the battles themselves wouldn’t even be that exciting to watch, and would probably feel missing after the final seasons of Dragon House give us some more good dragon-on-dragon melee.

While all of this may be true on paper, Dragon House at least gave HBO a bit of the benefit of the doubt. Find the magic of Game Of Throneswith its balance of character drama, palace intrigue, and grueling battles seemed nearly impossible, but the end product was a great first season.

It’s also important to note that HBO hasn’t greenlit this series and is only in talks to produce it at this time. That means there’s no showrunner, writers, cast, or director — just a vague idea at this point. No matter what happens with that, we’ll continue to await word from HBO on the next series to arrive in the Game of Thrones universe, whether it’s Season 2 of Dragon Housethe Dunk and Egg series, or even one of the anime series supposedly in the works.
