A live-action Disney reimaginingMoana is under construction. Dwayne The Rock Johnsonwho voiced the demigod Maui in the animated film, revealed the news in a pre-recorded message, which was released during the Walt Disney Company shareholders’ meeting on April 3.
“I am deeply touched and overwhelmed with gratitude for bringing Moana’s beautiful story to the big screen,” he said in a statement. “This story is my culture, and this story is emblematic of our people’s grace and warrior strength. I proudly wear this culture on my skin and in my soul, and this unique opportunity to reunite with Maui, inspired by mana and The spirit of my late grandfather, Grand Chief Peter Maivia, runs very deep to me.”
He added, “I want to thank my partners at Disney for their strong commitment to this special endeavour, as there is no better world to honor the history of our people, our passion and our purpose than through the realm of music and dance, which is at the heart of who we are as Polynesian people.
The original film featuring music written by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i And Marc Mancina was released in 2016. The film went on to receive Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature and Best Music (Original Song) for the hit song “How Far I’ll Go.”

When is the live action Moanawill the movie be released?
The release date of the feature film has not yet been announced. Johnson noted in his April 3 post that “it’s still very early in the process” and “there is still a lot of work to do.”

Like Walt Disney Animation Studios Moanathe action film “will celebrate the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to chart her own path,” according to Disney.
