The Headbang For Science Scholarship will go to Metalheads pursuing their studies in health or physical sciences!

Jose Mangin is one of the most recognizable figures in hard rock, heavy metal and extreme musical culture. His voice was heard around the world as he transcended borders with an undeniable passion for his craft. Mangin started as a fan of metal music in the late 90s before becoming a disc jockey for SiriusXM’s Liquid Metal channel. His enthusiasm for this kind of music was contagious and it didn’t take long for people to take notice and he became an ambassador for all things metal and hard rock. He is highly respected in the industry, hosting shows like Ozzfest, Knotfest, The Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards Show, as well as appearing in numerous interviews with artists ranging from Slipknot to Testament. And now the influential Sirius XM host will launch in impressive fashion”A whim for science“; an annual $30,000 scholarship to “Support the Next Generation of Heavy Metal Enthusiasts Pursuing a Health Care or Physical Science Education.” As three different heavy metal winners pursuing a health care education or physical sciences, with a GPA of 3.0 or higher, will be chosen to each receive an award of $11,000, per year. Three winners chosen each year will each receive a prize of $11,000.

“Finally, diehard Headbangers can get national recognition and monetary rewards for their academic achievement,” said Mangin. “I want to encourage students to excel in school, to love their metal, and to provide financial and motivational support for a successful future in healthcare/science.”

Jose is a dedicated advocate of science education for the Heavy Metal community. Studying chemistry at the University of Arizona before going to the Grad School for Pharmacy at the University of Tennessee, Jose knows the value of a science education first hand. “I wouldn’t have this blessed career and life if it wasn’t for my pursuit of a pharmacy degree. I owe everything to my upbringing.

“The $33,000 A whim for science the scholarship will go to three “way beyond motivation” students who have excellent grades, financial need, and a deep passion for Heavy Metal music. All high school seniors, four-year undergraduates, or graduate students pursuing a degree in health care or physical sciences, possess a passion for Heavy Metal, and have a GPA of 3.0 or higher are eligible to apply.
