Matt Casey returns for a second return visit.
While Lieutenant Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney) went to Alabama for special training in arson investigation chicago firehis absence will be filled by the return of Matt Casey (jesse spencer). At least for one episode – episode 18 it was reported by Variety.
Spencer is gone chicago fire during the 200e episode (October 2021), when Casey made the decision to move to Portland to serve as legal guardian to Ben and Griffin Darden, whose father Andy – Casey’s best friend – was killed in a fire in the chicago fire first episode. The boys’ mother, Heather, is in jail, so unless Casey intervenes, they would be placed in foster care and most likely separated.
At that time, Spencer said, “I realized I had been doing television for a long time. I added it up and this year is my 18th year because I went straight from Accommodation For chicago fire. We were approaching the 200th episode, so I called [showrunner] Derek [Haas] and I announced that I was leaving the show. He agreed that we should at least bring Casey to the 200th episode. It was a tough decision because I loved this show from the start, but there are other things I would like to do in the future that I need to take care of.

Even so, at that time, he told reporters, he would return and he kept his word. He returned for the Severide-Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) wedding in the Season 10 finale on May 25, 2022, because, after all, he was the best man. And now he’s back, in what could prove to be a very awkward episode due to the end of his long-distance romance with Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer).

Shortly after Casey returned to Portland from the wedding, he received a phone call from Dear John from Brett because she realized the long distance wasn’t going to cut it and told him that the time was not right for them. Since then, she has moved on and is finally dating Dylan (Christopher Allen) – and in the last episode, she told Dylan that she was ready to open up to new things.
The reason for Casey’s return has yet to be revealed.

Kinney unexpectedly took a temporary leave of chicago fire to attend to a “personal matter”, and the writers deftly sent him for training. We last saw him on the February 22 episode, but it’s unclear how long he’ll be MIA.
