The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including stunt coordinators in the new branch of production and technology, is particularly noteworthy, given the recent push for an Oscar for the falls.
With the Oscars now firmly in the rearview mirror, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the creation of a new production and technology directorate. Intended to represent those in key technical and production positions in all phases of filmmaking, from pre-to post-production, the branch already includes around 400 people who were previously classified as members-at-large.
Job titles that fall under the Production and Technology Directorate include Directors of Technology, Heads of Technology and Creative Services, Preservation and Restoration Specialists, and Credited Production Roles , including stunt coordinators, script supervisors, choreographers, music supervisors, colorists. , executive producers and associate producers.
In order to qualify for an invitation to the Production and Technology Branch, a candidate must have been actively engaged in the past eight years in theatrical film arts and sciences in a key creative or technical position.
If producing is their profession, the nominee must also have credited roles on at least eight theatrical feature films that, in the opinion of the executive committee, reflect the high standards of the Academy. If they hold a position leading any aspect of film production or technology, they must have held it for five consecutive years to be eligible for an invitation to the Academy.
A nominee may also have made scientific and/or technological contributions that have produced leading creative tools and/or systems for the crafts involved in creating the theatrical cinematic experience, or have received a scientific and technical award from the Academy, or have had direct involvement over the last eight years, not only in an administrative position, in the preservation and/or restoration of the heritage and current content of the moving image and/or recorded sound, or finally, have, in the opinion of the Production and Technology Executive Committee, achieved a unique distinction, achieved special merit, or made an outstanding contribution to the arts or sciences of motion pictures in the fields described above.
With the creation of the Production and Technology Branch, the Academy now has a total of 18 branches intended to represent all facets of the film industry. At present, only one member of the Production and Technology branch will be elected to the Board of Governors for the 2023-2024 fiscal year, in the hope that this person will help broaden the perspective of the Academy in council discussions.
The creation of the branch shows signs that the Academy is ready to continue moving forward with the industry to ensure that new voices and professions are represented and how changes to its governance structure can better support this evolution. .
The last time the Academy created a new branch was the casting directors branch in 2013, right after the documentary “Casting By” which made the case for an Oscar for casting. The inclusion of stunt coordinators in this new Production and Technology Branch is particularly noteworthy, as in recent years there has also been a significant move to establish an Oscar for stunt performers. As the Academy continues to make changes, the Academy looks set to at least talk about creating some of those awards that Oscar fans have been clamoring for.
