1,700 children celebrate Earth Day at SM malls nationwide.

SM Supermalls, together with its corporate social responsibility arm, SM Cares, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government units and partner schools and organizations joined the rest of the world in celebrating Earth Day at SM malls nationwide in April. 22, 2023.

Under the theme “Investing in our planet, investing in our youth”, SM Supermalls and SM Cares organized various activities aimed at raising awareness among children and their families about the importance of coming together in various sectors to take care of the environment. SM malls nationwide simultaneously hosted relevant and impactful celebrations with activities such as storytelling, coloring and sustainability tours, bringing together 1,700 children and 350 employee volunteers. These activities were intended to encourage all members of the family, especially the younger ones, to protect and respect Mother Earth.

Earth Day is an annual celebration run by the Earth Day Network that focuses on issues that affect the environment. First held in 1970, Earth Day was the result of a need for a unified response to various environmental issues like pollution and resource depletion. Today, the event is considered the largest environmental movement in the world, with millions of people joining in the celebrations every year.

SM Supermalls featured the art of multi-award winning Filipino artist, sculptor and illustrator, Manuel Baldemor. His works depict the rich cultural aspects of the Philippines and can be found in many institutions around the world. Her drawings and Earth Day poem inspired the Earth Day program at SM, reflecting a long-standing partnership on SM Cares programs for the environment, beginning with her design of SM’s first eco bags in 2007.

The storytelling activity included a special Earth Day story based on Baldemor’s artwork. The story reflected simple ways children can participate in sustainable living, on their own and with their families. Meanwhile, kids and kids at heart were welcome at the coloring activity section. Participants received art materials and a selection of Baldemor drawings to color. Shopping centers have used recycled materials to design activity areas.

And to top off the celebration, a sustainability tour was held where everyone took a guided tour of one or more of the mall’s green facilities such as electric vehicle charging stations, factories water recycling treatment plants, waste sorting bins, plastic waste collection cabins. , electronic waste collection bins and various facilities for bicycles.

To highlight the role of collaboration with the public sector in promoting environmental programs, SM City Fairview organized the DENR Gawad Taga-ilog Awards Photo Exhibition, which recognized winning local government units that are at the forefront Metro Manila Waterways Protection Guard. The agency also provided 800 tree seedlings to participants and customers through a DENR Community Pan-TREE to encourage SM Megamall, SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, SM City Fairview, SM City Novaliches, SM City Marikina, SM City East Ortigas and SM Southmall.

Quezon City’s Department of Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability has also promoted the city’s Trash to Cashback program to encourage its citizens to be Eco Warriors and promote recycling.

Celebrating Earth Day is just one of the many ways SM promotes a sustainable lifestyle among Filipinos, and the company has other programs to help care for the environment.
