Fashion’s biggest night! The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala 2023 will pay tribute to an icon.
Organizers of the annual event – commonly known as the Met Gala – announced their theme Friday, September 30. Officially titled “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty”, the festivity will highlight the legacy of the famous German fashion designer who died in 2019 at the age of 85.
“Every design begins with a sketch”, the official account of the Met Museum tweeted alongside a video of Lagerfeld at work.
As every year, the theme of the gala coincides with an exhibition at the museum. “Coming May 2023 – explore the artistic methodology and stylistic vocabulary of Karl Lagerfeld’s designs in ‘Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beaty’ at the Met’s #CostumeInstitute,” the historic institution shared.
The showcase will open to the public on Thursday, May 5 and will be celebrated at the invitation-only Met Gala on Monday, May 1. The exhibition will end on Sunday July 16.

Event coordinators have shared more details about the special presentation via the Met Museum’s website.
“Focusing on the designer’s stylistic vocabulary as expressed in aesthetic themes that appear time and time again in his fashions from the 1950s to his latest collection in 2019, the show will shed light on the unique working methodology of the German-born designer,” a statement on the website read. . “Most of the approximately 150 pieces on display will be accompanied by sketches by Lagerfeld, which highlight her complex creative process and the collaborative relationships with her premieres, or chief seamstresses.”
The gala was created in 1948 to raise funds for the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1999, voguethe editor of Anna Wintour took over the presidency, which paved the way for a more celebrity-centric party. The Met Gala is also one of four days a year that the Museum of the City of New York is closed to the public, along with Thanksgiving, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day.
Over the years, the Met Gala has become a defining event for the careers of Hollywood’s biggest names. Kim Kardashian first graced the iconic red steps in 2013 alongside her then-husband, Kanye West. The Skims founder, who was pregnant with daughter North at the time, was talked about for months thanks to her floral dress with attached glove sleeves. Many criticized the Riccardo Tisci look for Givenchy, but it’s now being hailed as one of the most memorable Met moments of all time.
“I was Kanye’s plus one and so nervous! I didn’t know anyone and I’m sure no one wanted me lol. I made my own lipstick and the color is so off. I came home and cried afterwards [out] insecure, but it’s one of my favorite looks now,” Kardashian tweeted in 2019.
Flash-forward to the 2022 event the TV personality attended with her ex-boyfriend pete davidson, in Marilyn Monroe’s crystal-covered Bob Mackie design – which also sparked heated debate. (THE Self-centered the author was accused of ripping the archive issue but denied damaging the dress.)
Other stars of the Met Gala include RihannaGuo Pei’s sunny design at the 2015 event and ZendayaThe Cinderella-inspired Tommy Hilfiger dress for 2019.
