Kai, the protagonist of Martha Wells’ “Witch King,” doesn’t quite look like your typical fantasy hero at first glance. He’s a demon – or, maybe, he was a demon. After being murdered, Kai’s consciousness remains, floating in an intervening space until he is awakened by a lesser mage hoping to channel Kai’s power for his own ends. Now Kai must try to figure out what happened to get him murdered in the first place, how much has changed in the time since then, and why a mysterious and shady council is gaining power. It will take a lot of magic and a few helpful allies to uncover the truth in time.
