Watch Kevin Harlan Lose His Mind to Furman’s Upset of Virginia

There were a number of wild upsets in the first weekend of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, headlined by 16-seeded Fairleigh Dickinson, who beat 1-seeded Purdue and Princeton 15 seeds, shocking not one but two teams to reach the Sweet 16.

The first major upset, however, came in a 13-4 game, when Furman beat Virginia in the craziest endgame streak of the tournament so far, as Virginia just kicked the ball after being pinned down in the corner, the Paladins stealing the ball. and drill a three to take a one-point lead with two seconds left. It was a truly crazy game and no one expected it, especially those calling the game as Kevin Harlan, Stan Van Gundy and Dan Bonner lost their minds on the court watching the final sequence unfold.

Thankfully, CBS Sports gave us the announcer’s camera footage of their reaction to the live game, which is incredible insight into the three very different ways they all took in a shocking turn of events.

Harlan is unquestionably the star, as the ever-exciting play-by-play man nearly fell out of his chair and then begged his colleagues to explain what they had just seen. Then there’s Van Gundy, who immediately recognizes that there’s disaster for Virginia as soon as the ball is thrown in the air, then sits there in stunned silence as Harlan shouts beside him. Bonner might be my favorite though, as a veteran of so many tournaments and wild times he just screams “oh you didn’t have to do THAT!” as the pass goes up and immediately turns to check the time and score to see what Virginia is about to have to overcome.

Announcer cameras are always fun to watch after great moments, and this one is immediately one of the best because they all take it differently, with Harlan delivering spectacular appeal as he always does to really hammer home the chaos of the moment.
