Elizabeth Olsen says filming can be ’embarrassing’ on set

Elizabeth Olsen’s role as the Scarlet Witch in the MCU leaves her blushing at the “stupidity” of the superhero genre.

The ‘WandaVision’ star revealed that filming Marvel movies is “just silly” in general.

“That’s just silly. There’s a lot of silly stuff. I always wish that one day they would just release a version of the movie without any special effects, because then you understand how ridiculous it is,” Olsen said. “And how spectacular the work is to make them.”

Without special effects, Olsen said the more serious dramatic scenes can be “embarrassing” to film, especially like watching on-screen love interest Vision (Paul Bettany) perish in “Avengers: Infinity War.”

“It’s very embarrassing to shoot this stuff, because, like, the world depends on you,” Olsen said. “It was one of the last things we shot. I felt really comfortable with him as an actor if we had to improvise that rhythm a bit. We were trying to find it, with [directors] the Russos guiding us. And I just remember chuckling the rest of the day, as [Thanos actor Josh] Brolin had his helmet on. And I don’t know. These movies are very silly, but you have to pretend to make them work.

Olsen also said of pretending to pull fingertip magic, “Ugh, I do that in public. But you have an outstretched hand that stops something with energy. And then you have another hand pulling this fake thing out of that dotted face. And it is painful and moving.

The ‘Martha Marcy May Marlene’ actress previously said she felt “frustrated” with her MCU contractual obligations when trying to balance superhero movies and indie films.

“I had that job security, but I was losing those elements that I felt were more of a part of who I was. And the further I got away from that, the less I became considered for it,” Olsen said earlier this year. “It took me away from the physical ability to do certain jobs that I thought were more in line with the things I enjoyed as a member of the public. And I’m the most honest.

Olsen also defended Marvel’s type of storytelling.

“I’m not saying we do independent art films, but I just think it takes away from our team, which bothers me,” Olsen said. “From an actor’s point of view, it doesn’t matter, I understand; I totally understand that there is another kind of performance that happens. But I think throwing Marvel under the bus takes away hundreds of very talented crew members. This is where I get a little feisty about it.
